During the cultural revolution Mao had his Red Guards rage against any and all traditional values. "Smash the Four Olds!" they screeched, "old ideas, old cultur, old habits, old customs," all of them must go!
Those included "feudal", "backwards" and "superstitious" values such as being open-minded, caring for others, doing honest business, not lying, not cheating, and so on. All had to be replaced with the "Invincible Mao-Zedong Thought" that claimed that "to struggle with heaven, earth and mankind is an eternal source of pleasure."
It produced a whole variety of results.
